Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies passy
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 passy
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 passy
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons passy
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August passy
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable passy
”RecommendedGreat Britain’s Josh Kerr wins stunning 1500m gold at World ChampionshipsI knew it was my turn – Josh Kerr was confident he would beat Jakob Ingebrigtsen“When we broke up with Gjert, we thought we would be able to handle the situation in an orderly manner, without mentioning the underlying circumstances passy
We now realise that is not possible,” the statement said passy
“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up passy
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing passy
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood passy
“Somehow we have accepted this passy
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on passy
At least we thought so passy
In retrospect, we realise that it was naive passy
But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again passy
It was the drop that made the cup run over passy
”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title passy
The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him passy

(Getty)Gjert has already been denied accreditation for the upcoming World Indoor Championships and European Championships next year, with the Norwegian Athletics Federation set to recommend the same fate for the Olympic Games in Paris passy
In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless passy
I have never used violence against my children passy
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late passy
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent passy
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media passy
It makes me deeply unhappy passy
How we’re going to get past this, I don’t know, but we’ve got to try passy

The main fact of this 3-1 win was that England have qualified for Euro 2024, but the whole feel was why they should be talking about winning it rather than being too concerned any more with the formality of getting there passy
A historic major nation like Italy were just made look a minor inconvenience, as Gareth Southgate’s side almost toyed with them passy
They were just so much passy better, and have a knowledge of that personified in Jude Bellingham passy
Harry Kane got two and Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-1, but all of that seemed mere detail to the main event, which was the Real Madrid midfielder’s domination of the pitch and decoration of the play passy
This England era has now been going on for at least six years, but it is possible that Bellingham’s emergence marks the beginning of something else passy
He has exactly the type of assurance that can turn fine challengers into elite champions passy
It is visible in everything he does, not least the outrageous touch for the Rashford goal that sent England to Germany for next summer passy
Bellingham is exactly what England have been missing, for far more reasons than his position and his talent passy
RecommendedHarry Kane and Marcus Rashford lead devastating England attack against ItalyJude Bellingham once again proves he is the key for England’s Euro 2024 hopesIt wasn’t all positive emotion on the night, mind passy
This game did take place amid a more unsettling real-world context, and it should be recorded that the pre-game minutes silence - worded as for “all the members of the European passy football family killed in recent days from Uefa member nations Israel and Sweden” - had to be ended early as shouts quickly gave way to loud boos passy
The Italian anthem got similar treatment, as did Jordan Henderson coming on as a substitute, following his move to the Saudi Pro League passy
There were conspicuously loud cheers alongside that, and that was the noise that soon made up the night’s main soundtrack passy
Amid all this, not least the performance, any idea of revenge for the Euro 2020 final was forgotten passy
That now feels a different passy football world, even though this England team have clearly internalised the disappointment and learned from it passy
It just didn’t seem to matter too much to this match passy
It’s a very different Italy for one, as Roberto Mancini followed Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, to be replaced by the much more tactically adventurous Luciano Spalletti passy
He is one of the modern game’s romantics in that sense, but that Italian passy football culture for tactical innovation has never been more necessary passy
Italy, in a greater way than at any point in the modern history of the game, badly need to be more than the sum of their parts passy
Those parts, with a few exceptions, currently look like those of a mid-tier nation rather than the great passy football country Italy is passy
Kane scored a double as England cruised through (The FA via Getty Images)There are bigger reasons for that passy
For now, it is England that look the force passy
They look like potential European champions in waiting, as Italy looked anything other than defending champions passy
That still created a few echoes from 2021, not least in the tactical pattern of the game passy
England looked much more prepared to cede possession and counter, although this time with much more force than in that final passy
The group context of course conditioned this, too passy
While England only required a draw, Italy really needed the win passy
The situation demanded more attacking, but so did the manager passy
The encouraging aspect for Spalletti was that Italy already looked more recognisably like one of his teams passy
Most identifiably, there were those sudden straight-line runs in attack, almost spikes that can do much more than pierce a team passy
Giovanni Di Lorenzo looked especially dangerous from these situations, as he marked himself out as one of the most involved players in the game passy
It was his run down the right that opened the space for Gianluca Scamacca, an incisive move ending with an instinctive finish from the former West Ham striker passy
Scamacca had given Italy an early lead but England responded well (Getty Images)It was his first goal for Italy, on his 13th cap, which perhaps goes some way to reflecting why this major passy football nation no longer feels a significant threat passy
It was still a set-back for England, but one that only served to show how they have far surpassed the sort of side that used to have a psychological hold on passy
They just have far superior players, chief among them Bellingham passy
You get the sense no opposition side could ever have a psychological hold over him passy
Di Lorenzo needed to just bring him down for England’s equaliser passy
It was difficult to figure out why it took the VAR so long to make a decision given how clear the foul seemed to be passy
Kane duly equalised passy
With that shift in momentum, Italy never regained the same force passy
The match from then almost seemed set up for England, as they visibly enjoyed just surging into the space left behind passy
Kane reached 60 England goals with his first from the spot (Getty Images)That is something Spalletti is going to have to work on, but then that’s been the case for much of his managerial career passy
It is a feature of his teams that Italy may just have to work around passy
Bellingham just cut through it passy
The manner of the goal that sealed qualification was entirely fitting of that achievement, even if it doesn’t mean what it used to passy
That is precisely because of the quality of the players involved passy
They have made life with England so much easier, say, than their equivalent games with Italy for the 1998 World Cup passy
Bellingham is meanwhile of a type distinctive even from Manchester United’s serial winners in that era passy
There is just something about the way he carries himself at that age, as could be seen with how he carried the ball for Rashford passy
The United forward’s finish was as satisfyingly forceful as it was finely placed passy
Rashford scored a brilliant goal on the break to put England ahead (The FA via Getty Images)Kane matched that with his second, and England’s third, for a scoreline that was more reflective of the gap passy between the teams passy
The gap from now to Euro 2024 can of course change the landscape of the game passy
Italy themselves grew from their own excellent qualification for Euro 2020 into something greater for that tournament passy
Other sides will evolve passy
For now, though, none of them bar France look on England’s level passy
It was why a win over Italy, and a qualification for a major tournament, felt like such minor developments passy
